Fruits are always good for health. It contains a lot of minerals and vitamins. It gives strength to the body and nourishes the body from within. Some fruits are cheaper and some fruits are more expensive. Instead of buying this kind of fruit we can buy a car. We are going to look at this kind of expensive fruit Yubari melon.

Yubari melon is the most expensive fruit in the world

Yubari melon is very expensive due to its sweetness. Yubari melon is an orange fleshy melon. It is perfectly round shape. It is one of the varieties of cantaloupe. Yubari melon is grown in Hokkaido, Japan. Melons are grown in long, vinyl greenhouses. It is renowned for its quality all over Japan. The popular name of this Yubari melon is Yubari King.

Yubari melon is a hybrid of two varieties of cantaloupe. They are Erlin's favourite and Burpee's "spicy" cantaloupe. Its scientific name is "Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus Naud. Cv. Yubari King".

In the early 1950s growers began to create the Yubari brand. In 1960 a co-operative was started with 17 farmers.

Yubari melon is very expensive due to its sweetness

Yubari melon is cultivated in Yubari city. Yubari city is surrounded by mountains contains volcanic ash. Melons are grown in the volcanic ash. Growers can control the temperature of the soil and the ash allows water quickly drain through, and allow the top remain dry. These characters promote the size of the melons and gives its characteristic aroma, juicy pulp, and high sugar content.

They are planted in February. The growing season ends in early September. It will be ready for harvest in 105 days after planting.

Melons are harvested by hand from their vines with scissors. Yubari melon is collected by Yubari Agricultural Cooperative. All farmers must belong to the Yubari Agricultural Cooperative Association which controls supply and hence prices. Farmers have to sell to the association. They can’t sell directly to buyers. The Association says it is to protect quality.

Beverage Ltd bought a pair of Yubari melons for the highest recorded price of ¥5 million

After harvesting, they are brought into the cooperative, where they are washed, quality checked and graded. A top-grade melon should be perfectly rounded and with exceptionally smooth skin.

They are usually shipped by air, even within Japan with wooden box to meet best quality. The profit margins allow this kind of luxury. Not only this, these melons are good to eat within 2 to 3 days after harvest.

In 2008 Japanese auction, two Yubari melons sold together for ¥ 2.5 million. In 2016 auction, Konishi Seika, a fruit and vegetable market in Amagasaki, bought a pair of Yubari melons at ¥3 million. In 2019 auction, Tokyo-based Pokka Sapporo Food & Beverage Ltd bought a pair of Yubari melons for the highest recorded price of ¥5 million.
