The Story of 1C

In 1856, three types of stamps were issued. The 1C was used in local newspaper and two 4C were used for letter postage.

During that time, stamps for British Guiana were printed in England and shipped to the South American colony. All three types of stamps were sold before the new stamps arrived. Postmaster E.T.E. Dalton asked the publishers of the official newspapers in Georgetown, Joseph Baum and William Dallas (who also printed the first seals of the colony in 1850) to print stamps for urgent purposes.

Dalton gave some hints about the design. Baum and Dallas used their newspaper printer to print 1C and 4C stamps on a bright magenta paper. They designed the stamp within the black lines with the sailing ship image and the newspaper objective "Damius petimus que vicissum" ("We give and expect in return").

Dalton was not satisfied with the design of the stamp. To protect against forgery, all postage stamps were ordered to be signed by a post office clerk.
